How I Rock...

We played rock band again for hte first time in a very long time.  And when I rock I like to wear masks.  It's fun, helps me get out of myseld and into random shenanigans and rockin out a little more than normal.  Tons of fun!
So as you can see I have hung up the old batman mask for something a little bit more rock, a lot more metal.  With an open mouth for singing and beer consumption too!  fun stuff.  that is all...

Food Truck Find!

there are a lot of food trucks around work, on wednesdays and fridays there are multiple trucks that park a little less than a mile away that are a little bit better in quality and selection even.  On wednesday we took the long walk  to check out the food trucks and when they asked what I wanted to drink and I looked at their selection my heart skipped a beat.  They had Faygo root beer!  of course that is what I got, and it was amazing.  I miss Faygo...

Creepy guys, not interested girls who just want attention.  Such is comic-con.
I swear i have a picture from a few years ago where i tried to take a pic of this guys booth and he popped up in the picture without me realizing it.
Best pen holder ever!  (deadpool can regenerate from anything, so it makes it more funny and less disturbing than putting pens and pencils in anyone else's head)

SDCC 2011 Day 4 (last day)

After waking up, I organized some more of my stuff, showered, then finished packing and loaded up the car. Checked out of the hotel and I was on my way to the "Hazard Center" trolley station by car for the last time. It was a little sad actually once I had realized. It started to hit me the night before while I was driving back to the hotel after leavin the station, which was emphasized by the fireworks that were going off for some reason.
Anyway, I get to the con in about 20 minutes, and get back into wandering for free sTuff, and taking a few last minute pictures that I forgot or put off taking until there less people around. I don't remember if I stayed for Sunday the previous years but it was way less packed, which is probably because e drugging is winding down, way less autographs from actors & actresses, dwindling panels, and even some booths start packing up. Others of course start to lower prices to reduce the stock that they have to pack and get some money.
I went to the Ashley Wood panel which was a lot better than expected. He talked about his toy line, his comics, and some movies that are being made from his works, pretty good stuff. After that I wandered abit more looking for a case for my customized munny figures. Though I didn't buy any considering I didn't have the exact specs for size and didn't want to buy a case that was too small or too large so I will have to wait on that a bit more.
I left the con, Hoping to get some of the outdoor pics I still had not taken though the one area that was decked out like the town from South Park was already taken down. I guess picture procrastination at the con is not a good thing if you wait until the last day. Oh well maybe I can find some pics online. The drive home was riddled with traffic and it took me at least an extra hour to make my way back to LA. I got back and it felt like I hardly left but had this knowledge of all things geek that no one else had. Strange feeling in a way. I will organize my pics tonight and post a few of them on here. I took over 400 pictures so I won't be able to post everything, but I will try to find the best ones to share with y'all.
Now I have to shower and get ready for work, bah humbug...

SDCC 2011 Day 3

Woke up early with the hopes of getting to the convention before it opened. There is an artist Ashley Wood who started his own toy line (three a toys) and there were some comic con exclusive figures that were of a smaller scale and relatively cheap considering what price they normally go for. I get to the convention and pretty much as soon as I arrive they open the doors to let everyone onto the floor. I walked quickly to the booth but the line was already fully wrapped around the IDW (comic publisher) booth, after a few minutes of a slow slow line there was talk of them being out of figures but no one left the line. Then members of the booth came around saying that the figures were all sold out. Still no one left the line. I wanted to check out the shirts, because the ones I saw people wearing were pretty cool, and was hoping tom pick up his art book possibly as well. I waited for about and hour and they guy in front of me buys that last shirt which was even xl, so It would have been perfect. Alas no. Basically I waited in line for about an hour for no reason. I wandered the floor most of they day, checking out each and every booth (with at least a glance).
I finally found Ben Templesmith to sign one of his books. I've carried the book with me since day 1 but no one was able to tell me what time he would be at the booth and signing items. I said hi and talked to him before pulling out the book that he did with the Presidents of the United States with each president having a one page biography and one page sketch. I picked it up a few years ago because I saw some of the artwork and thought it was gorgeous. It's also cool that the early presidents didn't have as much reference for their appearance as later presidents with photographs so their look more stylized which I enjoy. When I showed him the book, he was surprised, claiming that no one has ever really brought that book to a convention to get signed by him before. He took a picture of it to post to his blog and we chatted a bit about the book as he did some mild sketching and personalized it for me.
I check Doug one panel that was "creator owned comics with writer Robert Kirkman) though it was actually quite a large panel with writer Brian k Vaughn, artist Frank Cho and some other creators that I don't remember their names. Started out with revealing some new comics created by the panel that we should expect in the next year or so. Then they talke about how they got into comics and some helpful hints as far as submitting comic pitches and breaking into comics. It was a good and funny panel.
Then back to finish off the floor. I spent the rest of the day wandering around looking for cool free shwag which there was lots of random things that I will take pictures of once I get home and get it all organized. The most surprising thing to me is that most of the shirts that they were handing out had the maximum size of L, which is pretty tight on me and most other adult males, especially at the convention. You would think they would have thought that over better. I passed on going to any other panels because I knew that the lines would most likely have been formed hours before the panel and I didn't twang to lose valuable floor time. Around 5ish my friend Turner and his brother showed up and I wandered with them for about two hours with them and some of their friends before they shut the floor down at 7pm. Then we went to restaurant called "Dick's Last Resort" which was funny to me because I took a picture of the sign a few years ago because I thought it was funny and now I was actually going to eat there. It was one of those places where the servers are mean to the patrons. It was fun though the menu was small and all I wanted was a burger. They had two questionable items on the menu "the dolly" and "big woody", which meant that someone was most likely going to be forced to ask "what is a big woody?" which would most likely cause some kind of laughter, so I just asked about the dolly item and then the server actually explained the big woody which was a half rack of ribs I think. Ended up getting the dolly which was 2 pieces of chicken, rice, and veggies. It was pretty good. Walked around San Diego a bit then whenever turner and his brother left, their friends went to drop stuff off at their car and I took the trolley back so I could do the same.
Got back to the car around 10 something so I figured going back to the convention center area to go have beers with the rest of the guys seemed like more of a chore than anything so I just went back to the hotel after picking up a 6 pack. Was so tired that after two beers I ended up getting really tired and just went to bed.
It's Sunday now, the last day of the convention, pretty much packed up all my stuff last night to make this morning go faster, though now it is being delayed as I write this, but I figured I shouldn't wait until I get home to update for today, as well as, yesterday. Not much to do today but wander and see if there are any specials for people trying to unload all their goods so they don't have to take them back with them after the show, but we shall see. Also stuck between two "how to" panels or Ashley Wood's panel which overlaps both of the other panels. Tough call but I have till 1 pm to figure it out. Probably going to leave after the panels, I'd like to stay as long as possible but I know there will be a mass exodus out of the con that I don't want to be included in. Time will tell.

SDCC 2011 Day 2

The day started off with my partner in crime missing his flight to San Diego because of a flat tire. Which meant that I started off the day later than expected, and goin another day solo. As soon as I arrived at the trolley station my ride had arrived. Hopped on and made to the convention at almost 2. I headed straight for the hilton because in a bit the Black Dynamite Cartoon panel was going to start. I arrived in time to catch the end of the "children's hospital" panel which was very funny, and they announced that the Party Down movie was green lit and that they would start to film in the spring. The Black Dynamite panel was awesome as expected, they showed the pilot which was hilarious. After the panel I headed to the convention room floor, and started at the beginning with the hopes of clearing the floor. That didn't t happen, I think all in all I made it maybe 1/3 of the way through, though I did make multiple detours.
I met Joe Ledbetter again and was able to get him to sign is sketchbook for me, he even did a little doodle. I also picked up a limited wood print of his, only 50 made (which is awesome), so I will have to find a frame for it and put it on my wall next to my other rare art pieces. I was also able to get Skottie Young, and Humberto Ramos to sign their sketchbooks that I have owned for a while completing their signed sketchbook collections as well. I must say though that through the years some artists have spoiled me while signing books. So much so, that now when an artist just puts their name on it, I get disappointed. I don't need anything personalized (though Gris Gimly and Ben Templesmith both do that) which is pretty cool. I am so use to either large drawings or even simple pencil or ink sketches. I would say that it could be the more mainstream artists for the big Marvel don't care or want to spend the time doing it, instead they will brush off fans right in front of them to work on some commissioned piece that they are getting paid for. But I know that is a broad generalization especially because I can already think of exceptions. That does a little bitter, it's not meant to.
They started moseying people to the exit near 645 or so. I knew I wanted to see the Batman Year One preview screening but wasn't sure whether to see the 8 pm one or head back to the car to drop off some stuff and head back for the 10pm encore presentation. I was getting tired of the convention bag so I decided to go back to the car. I was able to drop off one bag, take my hoodie out of my backpack bag so I could wear it and replace that space with some drinks. Back to the con... I got back too early to go in to the encore of the animated batman movie, so I stopped a few rooms down to watch some highlights of panels of the day. This meant I happily walked in to them watching The Walking Dead panel which was funnier than I expected but very good and even though I didn't get to see the trailer it sounds like it will be amazing. Headed back to see batman, found out the first showing had a panel of director Bruce Timm, some of the voice cast, and some other people that I couldn't even see what they looked like. Then the first showing ended and I got to sit and wait for it to start (though it did give me a chance to check out the panels for sat n Sunday which I'm still not sure what I care to see, especially if I haven't conquered the main floor.
The movie was pretty good it started out with me not liking it too much, but I think that was because it seemed to be catering to people who don't know who batman is (who doesn't know batman?), and the narration had no emotion. Though after a bit my annoyance subsided and I got more into the story. It seems to be more of a commissioner Gordon movie than a batman one, but it worked well.
Back to the car took longer than I expected but that is purely because less trolleys run late at night. I also was able to help more people with the trolley system. This amuses me so much considering how horrible I am with giving driving directions. Got to thecae around 1 which left no time for food at applebees, so I broke down and got a burger and fries from jack in the box, and drank my Costco purchased green tea I stocked in the hotel rooms mini fridge. Gonna try to get an early start, thankfully I have monster energy drinks in that mini fridge too!

SDCC 2011 Day 1 - 7/21

Started my trip to Comic Con a few hours later than planned. Eventually made it to San Diego around noon. Then after finding a trolley station (I found the second one on my list, the first one seemed closed down for construction or something). Then of course I wasted time waiting for the right trolley to get me to the convention.  Finally I got into the convention around 2pm totally missing the one panel I actually wanted to see for Thursday. I spent most of my day at the convention wandering around reminding myself of the lay of the land and running errands for some folks back in LA. I also picked up a few things for myself, again competing my Sean "Cheeks" Galloway sketchbook collection. He has a new one each year but unfortunately last year I limited myself to buy one thing, and sadly it didn't make the cut. On another positive note, while Cheeks was sketching, the spidey villain, rhino in one of my new sketchbooks, I was able to meet Eric Robles, creator and writer for Nickelodeons Fanboy & Chumm Chumm. I talked to him for a bit about animation and the upcoming season, he gave me a sticker.  I should have gotten a picture with him, but I figured I would save pictures when I had a partner in crime with me to take the photo, also so i wouldn't have to rely on the kindness of geeky strangers.
I headed back to the car to go to the hotel for a bit. I ended up waiting for about 45 minutes for the correct trolley line, watching 3 orange line trolleys go by. I decided to have a go at an adventure and I hopped on the next orange trolley and after two trolley changes I made it back to the car. Strangely enough at least one person at each stop I got of at asked me for help with the trolley system. Seems after one day knave the downtown San Diego trolley system figured out.
Got to the car and realized I forgot the paper that I wrote the address to the hotel on at home. Luckily I had the idea of using my iPads email cache to save my ass. I accessed my gmail account and even though I didn't have Internet to get updated emails I had looked at the email with the info recently and it still had the text and even images saved in the memory. Then I was off to the hotel. The parking lot was confusing as he'll but after circling the entire complex I finally found my way out of there. While trying to follow the gps, the machine could not decipher fast enough the turns that I needed to make in time for me to actually make them. I got turned around missing my exit at least twice. One time I pulled into a mall, with restaurants surrounding it, to turn around. I got to a stop light and while leaning forward to check to see if anyone was crossing before I turned I accidentally leaned on the horn with my forearm. I don't use the horn often so it totally caught me off guard. I literally "laid on the horn". I must have startled some people outside as well, because for a bit i didnt even realize it was my honking, also there was no reason that I should have honked especially for the duration that I had it pressed. Yeesh.
Get to the hotel. Turns out that orbitz.com doesn't guarantee a two bed room, when you order one. I noticed this a few months back while looking at my itinerary. I called the hotel to make sure and they said it was fine and that I would have a two bed room. I get here and they have a one bed room for me. When I started to explain/complain they claimed there was no note about my call. They were able to give me another two bed room though the only ones they had left were smoking rooms. Surprisingly it isn't that bad. Since my first year at the con the rooms have been somewhat similar though the distance from the convention this year really diminished the price. But it seems just as good as the other places, if not surprisingly better. There's no rotten egg smell like the "ritzy" place in '09, I think last years was annoying because we were the absolute last shuttle stop. But at least this year there is a supposed continental breakfast in the mornings. They even give ya free wifi, though the connection is slow as molasses and my laptop doesn't want to connect. (Another reason there aren't any pictures posted)
After emptying the car into the room, claiming my bed, and filling the mini fridge in the room with drinks I headed back to the con area.
Got back to the con area around 830, wandered a bit checking out some outside attractions that I will have to check out during the day (to get a better view). Sat in on the end of a "comics on comics" panel which was comedians/writers talking about comics. It was almost like a discussion by the panel mildly catering to a small almost sad audience. They did make me laugh a few times though. One trolley trip later I'm near the car in the shopping plaza, and decide to finally get some food (since you can't call your first meal "breakfast" if its past 10pm) and end up going to the bar at applebee's. Happy hour 9 to close! Booyah! Cheaper drafts and $5 apps. 2beers and cheeseburger sliders later I successfully make it back to the hotel with no problems. Thats bout it for tonight. Watching tv shows on my laptop. Livin the hotel life. Should have picked up snacks...
I figure I will give long winded rambling breakdowns of the day at the cons. Then once I get home and get a chance I will post the pictures with funny or explanatory captions.

[9am 7/22 edit] internet was flaky last night, so was unable to post this.  but you get an update...
Continental breakfast almost always lackluster.  I snagged a croissant, a danish, and a cup of oj.  They also had bread for toast, donuts, just ran out of hard boiled eggs, and it seemed like they had a Belgium waffle maker but i didn't care to deal with that this morning.  Also got a text from Dave early this morning saying he missed his flight and was trying to figure it out.  I haven't heard anything from him since so I imagine that he was able to get on a plane and could not contact me to let me know when he would be arriving with the schedule shift.  Another late start to the con, though most random stuff is taken care of, hotel aquirred, trolley system figured out, roads around trolley station figured out, leaning towards another applebees happy hour dinner...

Damn my body...

Alarms set for 6, stirred awake @8. I guess my body didn't want me to start my trip with 2-3 hrs sleep, it would have nothing less than 4-5. Luckily the first panel I wanted to go isn't until 1 so I should be fine. No waiting in line to get in to comic-con today...

Captain America This Friday!

Not quite a way into Wonka's Factory but a free admittance to an early screening of Captain America ain't too shabby.
Captain America was pretty awesome.  It was a lot more comical than I had thought it would be.  I guess the audio really does add a lot to a movie heh.  The 3D in it was nice as well, a few things that distracted me, but luckily not in any of my shots hah.  My Name is in the credits under Stereo D for Depth Artists, it is pretty much middle of the middle, like dead center almost.  It jumped out at me as well.  Also the actor Neil McDonough is in it so two McD's representin'.  Anyway its 3am and I am leaving in a few hours to go to Comic-Con so onto bed I go.

Quick weekend re-cap...

spent most of the weekend watching the Harry Potter movies with Ben so we could remember what happened in them before seeing the final movie on Sunday.  The movie was good, as a series of movies it was really good.  Kind of bitter it's over after watching so much of it in such a short amount of time though.  Nothing too funny that jumps out at me from the weekend, though I did see a man riding a two seat bicycle by himself.  It was amusingly sad to be honest, but I couldn't pull my phone out in time to snap the picture.

Speaking of random pictures... I know I will have some practice with my new camera taking random pictures this weekend at comic-con.  Still need to finish getting prepped, basically figuring out my transport from the hotel to the con, how to pick up Dave from the airport, get back to the hotel then back to the con, and then of course any books I choose to bring in the hope I could get them signed.  Seems like this year is going to be pretty tame compared to the last two years.  Not as many movies and a lot of random panels that I'm not sure if I care to see.  I get a day to wander by myself which will be interesting as well.  I will do my best to update y'all but not sure if I will be able to post pics daily or not.  Whatever that's still a few days away.  Getting excited about it now though since it's so close...

Summertime Stroll

Even though I don't like the sun or heat sometimes the summer feeling takes over you.  Walking around in the sun with no clouds in the sky, rockin out to whatever new tune your feeling like listening to at that point, having a blast.  Though the cool factor tends to be diminished whenever you are sporting the uv protection strip the optometrist gives you after pupil dilation...

Thanks Mass Paranoia and Chaos...

We got to leave work two hours early today (with pay) because of "Carmageddon", which is basically shutting down the freeway for around 50 hours over the weekend.  Supposedly they were going to start closing down on-ramps around 7pm and since we usually leave work between 6 & 7 we got to leave at 4!  It didn't really matter to me very much on the 15 minute drive back to the house with mild traffic.  I imagine the rest of the weekend may be interesting if I have to drive very far but I doubt I will have to...

will have to venture out to see the new Harry Potter on Sunday, but our theater is pretty local anyway.  so we shall see...

They Grow Up So Fast...

I'm currently upstairs working in the office and I can hear some kids a few houses away.  They aren't the Kinder-Dome kids but I can still hear them jibber jabbering on about nonsense.  Then I hear one of the boys who may be around 10-12 by the voice say, "That's F*ckin Retarded!"

to keep this up to the moment he just said "F*ck yea" or "F*ck you" i can't tell.  Wait no it was F you, he just said it again.  There are at least 2 kids there that are way younger than he is from the voices I hear.  That is just sad.  I mean I curse, sometimes more than I should, but then again I'm almost 29, and I also never curse around children.  Eh they ain't my kids.  Though it would be interesting to hear what his parents would say if they witnessed it.  Would they then curse him out for cursing.  The world (me and everyone who reads this) may never know...

Lethargic Convenience

I've been at a new location of employment for about 2 weeks now and still when I go to the restroom and am about to wash my hand still hold my hands under the faucet expecting it to be motion sensitive like the ones were at Stereo D.  Makes me feel stupid every time i try to wash my hands.  Thought I would share...

Starting working on a few new mini projects from last years sketchbook this weekend but nothing to really show. Worked too long on one before I decided it wasn't working. Glad I didn't spend too long on it. Though it could have been hammock time... On the other hand I have the collage for my next real life project figured out. Will take some pics once I have it put together. Hopefully sometime this week...

Whoops... hah Whoops... heh...

I successfully spilled the same drink on me twice today within 5 minutes. Tryin to be healthier bit by bit during lunch I got Hi C instead of somethin else from the fountain drinks at work.  The first time I was riding up the elevator with about 5 other people (my director and producer among them), The cup lid popped off which made it so I instantly squeezed the paper cup spilling drink on myself, my shoes and a bit in the elevator.  Then when I got to my desk I went to put the drink down laughing to myself about the elevator and the same thing happened, though this time I spilled on myself, the corner of my desk, my notebook, and then it spilled a bit on the carpet.  There were about 5 people in the room that all laughed with me but probably more at me.  More so about cleaning it up with paper towels than the initial splattering.  Luckily black shorts, black shoes, and blue shirts don't stain once it dries. Though my socks are splattered and there are some carpet marks that show that eDz been there...

Gassy

"A Windy Day"
I did this today while I was getting use to CG again.  It turned out decently.  Tried for a "cloudy look", think it works enough, though I doubt it would animate well, and don't even want to think how long an animation of this would take to render...

I'll throw some test renders and such over to the SSPlog, and they should have them up soon I would imagine...
Amusingly enough this was based off of one of those sketches I did last June, wow didn't really keep up with that aspiration.  Now I got this one and Star Guy out the door from the sketchbook series.  There's about 8 more that I want to do, though some will be a much lager undertaking than the others.  which will be next... time will tell...

*EDIT* - I re-posted the image, the one I originally posted wasn't the final one... sorry.  Also I looked at my sketch book from last June and Page 1 was this idea, and page 2 was Star Guy.  Very odd coincidence I believe.

The Sad & Lonely DJ

When Les and I went to see Transformers 3 on Friday I saw something that made me sad outside the theater in the shopping complex.  Near the outdoor fountain was a DJ with two turn tables.  He looked like he was enjoying himself but there was hardly anyone around let alone enjoying his music.  At one point one of the adult males at the fountain was puppeteering his child to dance to it but that was about it.  Until his groupie showed up that is.
I was too far to get a good look at his woman but she kept sliding up next to him and whispering in his ear, then at some point she got out her camera and was taking video of the surrounding area of the DJ.  It made me laugh, I hope he knew her and it wasn't just some mall cougar stalking her prey.

Find Chaffy Gift

I forget if I ever told y'all about the gift that Jamie Smart sent me after doing my fan art pieces for his website.  He sent me a Find Chaffy Book, which he signed for me, some find chaffy stickers, and a poster.  I took some pictures of the book and signature and thought I would share them.
Find Chaffy Cover
First Page Inside Cover
The book is like a where's waldo it looks insane as far creating the art for it.  So many characters inside.  Even though it's a children's book I am going to try to find all the chaffy's.

I found tons of other little treats and some random things like coupons that expired over a year ago while cleaning my room.  Nothing too cool to talk about except this though.
